NüVoices is looking for a podcast editor and podcast producer!

The NüVoices Podcast is looking for new team members. We’re currently looking for a podcast editor and podcast producer to work on our ongoing interview series, which has been active since 2018.

Ideally, we’d love our new producer and editor to be passionate about our twofold mission: 1) diversifying English-language coverage about China and its neighbors and 2) uplifting historically marginalized voices in academia, the publishing industry, and journalism.

For both open positions, one year of experience in a podcast-related role is required for consideration. We’re looking for audio professionals who keep tabs on current events, pop culture, and politics in China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan – with a feminist perspective.

These are both freelance contract roles and new hires will be paid $120 USD per episode.

The producer and editor roles are fully remote positions. We encourage applicants from anywhere in the world to apply.

Currently our interviews are conducted in English. But we will take special consideration of candidates who are proficient or fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, and other Sino languages for future non-English audio offerings.

Previous NüVoices Podcast team members have gone on to work at Politico, the Nieman Foundation, the National Committee on United States China Relations, Bloomberg, NPR member stations, and more.

Our podcast enjoys a global audience and our episodes have been downloaded over 70,000 times in the last 3 years.

Start date is slated for the end of September.

About our open podcast producer role:

The ideal candidate is someone who is experienced in audio editing, cutting tape, and working with audio hosts to create compelling monthly episodes (with the possibility of publishing an episode every two weeks). You can handle long interviews and find the gems of any conversation.

You’ve worked with hosts unfamiliar with podcasting, and can get them up to speed on recording an interview from home – even if they’ve never picked up a mic or opened their iPhone recorder app before. You have a knack for troubleshooting audio and cutting stutters, sighs, and the occasional dog bark, baby cry, or car horn (it happens!)

You’ll be working with the new editor, who will be quality checking your work, suggesting edits, managing our production schedule, and guiding big picture planning.

Applicants must have one to two years of experience in a podcast-related role, particularly long form audio journalism. We don’t care if you prefer Pro Tools, Hindenburg, or Adobe Audition. Whatever software you prefer to cut tape and mix down these episodes is completely ok with us!

Essential duties include:

*Editing audio and cutting down tape while tightening the most compelling parts of an interview.

*Assembling podcast episodes with intro music, interview section, musical transitions, outro music, and credits. We need a producer who is comfortable handling music fades.

*Assisting with remote recordings: help guests and hosts with recording remotely before (and possibly during) interviews.

*Assisting with guests and hosts to deliver their audio files in the correct format to the producer.

*Uploading audio to our podcast hosting platform and inputting all required fields.

About our open podcast editor role:

As the NüVoices podcast editor, you’ll be in charge of quality control, fact checking, and having the final say on the podcast’s final script.

You’ll edit and refine the producer’s podcast drafts and complete the web posts for each and every episode. In the event the podcast producer is sick or traveling, you’ll step up to cut and mix down the final version of each episode.

Lastly, you’ll be the liaison between our group of hosts and the producer, and the first in line for any tech support that may come up during the recording process.

This role is ideal for someone with previous podcasting experience and is ready for a managerial role on a freelance basis. The ideal candidate is a team player and is able to give concise and effective feedback to the producer and can guide new hosts in the right direction, especially if they’ve never recorded an interview before. You have ideas about creative sound design and want to find new formats to make our interviews as compelling, interesting, and informative as possible.

Essential duties include:

*Reviewing podcast episode drafts that are filed by the producer. Offering critical feedback and implementing suggestions.

*Assisting with remote recordings i.e. helping guests and hosts with recording software before (and possibly during) interviews.

*Manage workflow and schedule between hosts and the producer.

*Posting podcast episodes to our WordPress CMS.

*Suggesting topic areas and possible guests.

Interested in either of these roles? Send a brief email to nuvoices@protonmail.com with your qualifications and how the NüVoices mission resonates with you. Also please include some thoughts on one of our recent episodes: tell us what you liked, what you didn’t, and what you’d change for a smoother listening experience.
