Our Charter

Our Mission
NüVoices’ mission is to amplify women’s voices on China.  We all know great women working in, on, or otherwise connected to China, and we want more of these voices to be heard. As a group, we pledge to support, nurture, and celebrate the amazing, diverse women in this field, to publish their work, and shout about it from the rooftops (and the internet). Our primary aim is to showcase the work of women writers, researchers and artists, as well as those who identify as non-binary. We also celebrate the work of BIPOC artists, creators and researchers.

Our Diverse Community
We welcome the involvement of people of ALL genders, including the many good men who already support our mission and contribute to our cause. NüVoices is trans-positive and we strive to avoid perpetuating harmful stereotypes & micro-aggressions.

Our Values
We expect to be treated fairly, as equals, and with respect, and we expect everyone within our organisation, and on our internet and social media platforms, to treat others in the same way.  Our editorial board reserves the right to make editorial decisions.

Our Name
NüVoices comes from the Mandarin Chinese word for woman (“nü”), which helpfully is pronounced like the English word “new”, so you see what we did there.

Our Location
Some of us live and work in China, others are based around the world.  You do not need to be geographically resident in China to be part of this project, although you do need to be passionate about the subject of China.  This is broadly defined and includes work on the PRC, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Chinese influences in the wider world.

Code of Conduct

NüVoices is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, age, race, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of participants in any form.

This code of conduct applies to all NüVoices events and spaces, including our website, our podcast and all our social media communities both online and off. Anyone who violates this code of conduct may be sanctioned or expelled from these spaces at the discretion of the NüVoices board.

Some NüVoices spaces may have additional rules in place, which will be made clearly available to participants. Participants are responsible for knowing and abiding by these rules.

As an editorial collective, NüVoices is enthusiastic about partnering with many media outlets, artistic organizations and community groups. Each partner is expected to thoroughly review this Code of Conduct and pledge to help ensure harassment-free spaces for all participants.

Reporting

If you are being harassed by a member or partner of NüVoices, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact us at editors@nuvoicesprod.wpenginepowered.com. If the person who is harassing you is on the team, they will recuse themselves from handling your incident. We will respond as promptly as we can.

This code of conduct applies to NüVoices spaces, but if you are being harassed by a member of NüVoices outside our spaces, we still want to know about it. We will take all good-faith reports of harassment by NüVoices members, especially by those we are in partnership with, seriously. This includes harassment outside our spaces and harassment that took place at any point in time. The abuse team reserves the right to exclude people from NüVoices based on their past behavior, including behavior outside NüVoices spaces and behavior towards people who are not in NüVoices.

In order to protect volunteers from abuse and burnout, we reserve the right to reject any report we believe to have been made in bad faith. Reports intended to silence legitimate criticism may be deleted without response.

We will respect confidentiality requests for the purpose of protecting victims of abuse. At our discretion, we may publicly name a person about whom we’ve received harassment complaints, or privately warn third parties about them, if we believe that doing so will increase the safety of NüVoices members or the general public. We will not name harassment victims without their affirmative consent.

Consequences

Participants or partners asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

If a participant or partner engages in harassing behavior, the Board members may take any action they deem appropriate, up to and including expulsion from all NüVoices spaces and identification of the participant as a harasser to other NüVoices members or the general public.

This anti-harassment policy is based on the example policy from the Geek Feminism wiki, created by the Geek Feminism community.
